Avoiding Falls at Home

Avoiding Falls at Home

By SVA Publications

Falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults, but many falls are preventable. Simple changes to your home and habits can significantly reduce your risk.

Home Safety Modifications

Lighting: Ensure all areas are well-lit, especially stairs and hallways. Use nightlights in bedrooms and bathrooms. Keep flashlights accessible for power outages.

Remove Hazards: Secure loose rugs or remove them entirely. Keep walkways clear of clutter and cords. Immediately clean up spills on floors.

Bathroom Safety: Install grab bars in the shower and near the toilet. Use non-slip mats in the tub and on bathroom floors. Consider a shower chair or bench if standing is difficult.

Stairs and Steps

Ensure handrails are sturdy and extend the full length of stairs. Mark the edges of steps with contrasting tape if they are hard to see. Never carry loads that block your view while using stairs.

Personal Prevention

Wear supportive, non-slip footwear — avoid walking in socks or loose slippers. Have your vision checked regularly. Review medications with your doctor, as some can cause dizziness or affect balance.

Exercise programs that improve strength and balance, like tai chi, significantly reduce fall risk. Talk to your doctor about a fall risk assessment if you have concerns.
